In Word 2011, you can add a shape to your document by selecting the Shape icon on the Home ribbon; this is organized into categories instead of displaying all of the options at once.

In the Shape Styles panel on the context-sensitive Format ribbon for Drawing Tools, you will find options to set the shape to an existing style from the gallery, manipulate the shape fill color, change the width and style of the shape outline, or add effects to your shape similar to what can be added to text through the text effects menu. With the shape selected, right-clicking and selecting Format Shape will open a dialog box that lets you alter these properties for your shape; this is the same dialog box that you get by selecting the expansion icon on the Shape Styles panel in Word 2013.
